Nascido em 1982, David Shillinglaw cresceu em Londres e se formou na Central Saint Martin em 2002. Atualmente vive e trabalha em Margate, Reino Unido. O artista britânico é conhecido por explorar temas em torno da “condição da mente humana” – David atua neste espaço conflituoso e confuso, que em última análise se relaciona com a condição humana: uma necessidade implacável de controle dentro de um mundo desordenado. “The british artist is renowned for exploring themes around the "mind human condition" – David works in this conflicted and messy space, which ultimately relates to the human condition: a relentless need for control within a disordered world. His vibrant, vital paintings present a chaotic system, in which natural forms, freely connected words and human features both burst from and are contained within grids, boxes and organised lines. Contradictory feelings of freedom and confinement, safety and claustrophobia, coexist within his works. 

This search for structure moves from the macro to the micro in his works, from our will to understand entire universes right down to our own lives and the troubles within them. David’s more figurative portraits—paintings depicting the human head and shoulders—call to mind Frankinstein’s monster: a tightly packed selection of geometric shapes and forms, bringing together colours with both upbeat and downbeat connotations. In these evocative pieces the human is conflicted and labyrinthine: a mix of identities, feelings, thoughts and forms. 

These works confront the restrictive framework that is often applied to human life, leading to rigid definitions of gender, personality type and identity. David’s portraits pull away the calm and singular facades that many people walk around with and return the human to its innately complicated, beautiful self. These portraits do away with the binaries typically used to understand humanity and offer a more open-minded, compassionate view. These figures are allowed to be exactly as they are, jumbled but whole.
