ERITAGE Exhibition | "Metamorphosis”

Welcome to "Metamorphosis," an exploration of transformation that transcends the boundaries of time, culture and individuality. This exhibition unites the works of seven artists from around the globe under the common thread of textiles.

Through the creations of these seven artists—David Shillinglaw (UK), Expanded Eye (UK), Joana Gomes (PT), Kwame Sousa (ST), Lauren dela Roche (US), Lisette Van Hoogenhuyze (NL), and Thiago Molon (BR) —you will witness the sophisticated interplay between individual and collective consciousness. Each artist's work encapsulates the spirit of our transformative age urging us to examine the multifaceted threads that shape our existence.

ERITAGE Exhibition | "Revivescence: A Journey to the Present”

ERITAGE, in partnership with the contemporary art gallery THIS IS NOT A WHITE CUBE, is pleased to present: "Revivescence: A Journey to the Present," a solo exhibition by Angolan artist Osvaldo Ferreira. The show will take place in Lisbon starting on May 23rd, 2023, opening the art week in the Portuguese capital.

Osvaldo Ferreira (b. 1980, Angola) explores themes associated with the everyday life of the Angolan society, evidencing an intergenerational continuity / discontinuity with regard to social experiences.

Taken together, the title "Revivescence: A Journey to the Present" and the themes explored by the artist in his work suggest a process of rediscovery and reclamation of African cultural and social heritage, and a recognition of the need to acknowledge and address the legacies of colonization and globalization in order to build a more equitable and just future.

Sob o título “Submersos”, Maria Lynch expõe uma nova série de trabalhos em pintura e desenho. As pinturas, de grande e médio formato, são como ecrãs negros que revelam e simultaneamente ocultam formas inventadas que se relacionam com imagens e fragmentos de cidades, ou objectos estruturais trabalhados com uma paleta cromática muito singular. A casa ou o contentor, imaginário, de desejos e de emoções, é também presente nos desenhos, alguns destes executados a partir das pinturas, como uma reflexão sobre o seu próprio trabalho.

No Teatro das Emoções | “In The Theatre of Emotions”

A Galeria Eritage em Lisboa inaugura na próxima quinta-feira, 17 novembro, a exposição individual “No Teatro das Emoções” do artista José Emídio (1956, Matosinhos). Esta mostra celebra os 40 anos desde a primeira exposição individual do artista português.

Há momentos em que uma exposição não é apenas uma exposição. É antes uma emocionada e comovente viagem ao teatro das emoções gerado a partir das partículas contidas no rasto deixado por toda uma vida acondicionada em momentos, instantes feitos retrato de fragmentos, retalhos do que somos e do que nos fez ser como somos.

A universe that runs in a particular time - in the future of the Brazilian Northeastern tradition. A future that mirrors the richness of the past and reasserts the resilience and transformative potential of its symbols.

For it´s first individual exhibition in Europe, the duo presents in first hand the series “Abstract”, specially developed for this show. ´Abstratos' is a dip in the density of this cosmic broth. An expansion that takes place into the being of experiences and memories. In 'Abstratos', Terezadequinta and Robezio seek the matrices of the weft, the lead wires that intertwine their individualities to form the essence of Acidum.

Temos o prazer de anunciar o artista britânico David Shillinglaw para nossa primeira exposição de 2022. Nascido em 1982, ele cresceu em Londres e se formou na Central Saint Martin em 2002. Atualmente vive e trabalha em Margate, Reino Unido. O artista britânico é conhecido por explorar temas em torno da “condição humana conflitante e confusa” – nossa implacável necessidade de controle dentro de um mundo desordenado e caótico.

We are delighted to announce the Uk based artist David Shillinglaw for our first exhibition of 2022. Born in 1982 he grew up in London and went on to graduate from Central Saint Martin’s in 2002. Currently lives and works in Margate, UK. The british artist is renowned for exploring themes around the "conflicted, messy human condition" – our relentless need for control within a disordered and chaotic world.

We will speak clearly from the beginning. There is no that. There are no individuals, far from it. No, Francisco; no, Ricardo. Far from it, far from it. We won’t talk about the gallery. Less than texts, which always try to give themselves the power of meaning. The history of what happens here is the history of machines.

A floresta, na sua sinistra espacialidade, parece reconfigurar o viajante perdido numa rede de enganos visuais que é o olhar sobre si mesmo. E aqui se explica a natureza enigmática das pinturas. Elas parecem evocar a natureza dos quebra-cabeças, análoga ao jogo dos 15, em que cada pastilha deverá ser deslocada até se resolver a ordem numérica através da movimentação da sua adjacência. A inclusão desta possibilidade de fractal transformado em quebra-cabeças graceja com a aparente dimensão labiríntica da floresta.

The forest, in its sinister spatial frame, seems to reconfigure the traveller lost in a net of visual mistakes that is the gaze on oneself. And this explains the enigmatic nature of the paintings. They seem to evoke the nature of puzzles, analogous to the Game of Fifteen, in which each tile must be moved until the numerical order is resolved by moving its adjacency. The inclusion of this possibility of a fractal transformed into a puzzle jokes with the apparent labyrinthine dimension of the forest.

Change is the only constant. Year by year, month by month, day by day, moment by moment, everything is changing. A rite of passage is our way to stop together, and pay attention to change. in rites of passage we honor the past and chart a course into the future, becoming conscious about what we have learned. The selected artists present recent and new works that point in the direction of a rite of passage, an observance of change, a shifting identity, a call to action.

A mudança é a única constante. A vida é um processo de eternas transformações que ocorrem de forma gradual e sutil: ano a ano, mês a mês, dia a dia, momento a momento. Ritos de passagem são o nosso modo comum de parar e refletir sobre essas mudanças. Nos ritos de passagem, honramos o passado e traçamos um curso para o futuro, conscientes do nosso aprendizado. Os artistas selecionados apresentam trabalhos fundamentais que apontam na direção de um rito de passagem, uma observância da mudança, uma identidade inconstante, um apelo à ação.

Wozen Exhibition | Maria Lynch

Maria Lynch é uma artista multidisciplinar nascida em 1981 no Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. A presente exposição Passes, é a primeira individual da artista carioca em Portugal, resultado de um período de 5 meses em residência artística. “Passes” propõe uma pausa, não para uma reflexão mental, mas para este corpo/fronteira que age contra os seus poderes extraordinários. Os estados de impermanência da consciência são muito importantes para atingir essa Oeuvre.

Maria Lynch is a multidisciplinary artist born in 1981, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The current exhibition Passes is the first solo exhibition of the Carioca artist in Portugal, the result of a 5-month artistic residency. Maria invites us to pause. This is not a mental reflection but a body/border that acts against its extraordinary powers. These states of the impermanence of our consciousness are fundamental to attain that state.

Wozen site-especific | Space of Other

Space of Other is a spatial installation by architect Afaina de Jong and artist Innavision (NL) that explores the relation between space and identity in the context of the gentrifying city. The installation mediates between the public spaces of the city, its interior spaces and its residents by being very much ‘Other’. During May and June Space of Other will host performances and talks in the Space of Other installation at Wozen and invite local change agents, creatives, and thinkers to further explore how how to define identity within the dynamic environment of the city; A vital question in the postcolonial world we live in. Wozen Exhibition | Expanded Eye

Three months after their arrivel to Lisbon, daily rountine has showed us that ideas are as beautiful in their heads as they become in reality. Disciplined, discreet and always conscious to the effect of their work in the environment in which it is inserted, Kevin and Jade are the art they produce: an Impressive creative talent at the service of a beautiful and enlightening message. It is a privilege for Wozen to be able to share this message, carefully prepared in the form of the exhibition "No Future Without Memory", with the Lisbon community that inspired them so much through all the creation process, and now has the opportunity to recognize itself in every piece of memory present in this space.

Três meses após a chegada do casal londrino à Lisboa, o convívio diário nos mostrou que as ideias são tão belas em suas cabeças quanto se tornam na realidade. Disciplinados, discretos e sempre atentos ao efeito de seu trabalho no ambiente em que se insere, Kevin e Jade são a arte que produzem: um impressionante talento criativo a serviço de uma linda e esclarecedora mensagem. É um privilégio para a Wozen poder compartilhar esta mensagem, cuidadosamente preparada na forma da exibição “No Future Without Memory”, com a comunidade lisboeta que tanto os inspirou durante todo o processo de criação, e agora tem a oportunidade de se reconhecer em cada pedaço de memória presente neste espaço.

Após sua primeira Residência Artística de Inverno, a Wozen apresenta a exposição fruto de uma intensa investigação em torno de uma geração específica, da virada do milênio, da transição digital e das crises econômicas globais consecutivas. Onde através da expressão conjunta de três artistas portugueses Binau, Joana Gomes e Salvador Salazar, representam uma geração que vem questionar padrões e nos trazem profundas reflexões e provocações.

After its first Artistic Winter Residence, Wozen presents the exhibition result of an intense investigation about a specific generation, of the turn of the millenium, of the digital transition and the consecutive economic global crises. Through the collective expression of three Portugueses Binau, Joana Gomes and Salvador Salazar, represent a generation that comes to question patterns and bring us deep reflections and provocations.

Francisco Vidal, ou Xico, como o mesmo prefere, chegou até nós em 2016, ao aceitar o convite para a exposição colectiva Glocal - No Regional de um Espaço Sem Fronteiras. O artista angolano de 40 anos adentrou o espaço da Wozen cercado da aura de mistério e louvor que acompanha a maioria das referências ao seu nome nos círculos artísticos de Lisboa, Luanda e Londres.

Francisco Vidal, or Xico, as he prefers to be called, came to us in 2016, after accepting the invitation to participate in the collective exhibition Glocal - No Regional de um Espaço Sem Fronteiras. The 40 year old angolan artist entered Wozen’s space surrounded by the aura of mystery and praise that precedes most references to his name in the artistic circles of Lisbon, Luanda and London.

Duas gerações, Gianguido Bonfanti e Pérola Maia Bonfanti, pai e filha, em uma proposta de diálogo transgeracional, tomam como princípio e fim o Humano em suas diversas possibilidades. O Homem sem fronteiras que afirma sua humanidade diante dos destroços do mundo.

Two generations, Gianguido Bonfanti and Pérola Maia Bonfanti, father and daughter, in a proposed transgenerational dialogue, use the Human Being, in all its diverse possibilities, as a beggining and end. The Human with no borders, asserting its humanity from the ashes of this world.

“Splendid stories of disorder” is a site-specific art project developed by the french artist Diane Giraud in partnership with Wozen.

Os casais mais sólidos assentam numa complementaridade que corresponde a uma desigualdade à partida impossível de colmatar – Holmes e Watson, ou as suas caricaturas crísticas Poirot e Hastings, são o protótipo dessa relação – em que um deles serve para realçar o outro.

Les couples les plus solides sont fondés sur une complémentarité qui recouvre une inégalité de départ irrattrapable – Holmes et Watson, ou leurs caricatures christiques Poirot et Hastings, en sont les prototypes – où l’un des deux sert de faire-valoir à l’autre.

MURTA, Teresa CG, nasceu a 5 de janeiro de 1993. Estudou na Caldas da Rainha e concluiu a licenciatura de Artes Plásticas pela ESAD.cr. Foi residente na Casa da Praia, em 2015, enquanto concluia o curso de design gráfico na ETIC, em Lisboa, cidade onde vive e trabalha. Apesar da pouca idade, MURTA é uma artista prolífica e versátil, com um estilo de pintura singular e instantaneamente reconhecível, mesmo dentro do vasto universo dos expressionistas abstratos.

MURTA, Teresa CG, was born on January 5th, 1993. She studied at Caldas da Rainha and graduated in Visual Arts at ESAD.cr. She completed a residency at Casa da Praia, in 2015, while graduating in Graphic Design at ETIC, in Lisbon, where she lives and works. Despite her young age, MURTA is a prolific and versatile artist, with a singular and immediately recognizable style of painting, even among the broad universe of abstract expressionists. 

A exposição "Traços de uma Infância - Desenhos da Autoria de Crianças Refugiadas na Grécia", desenvolvida pelo projeto Drawfugees com o apoio da UNICEF Portugal, consiste na apresentação de uma seleção de desenhos elaborados por crianças sírias, afegãs e iraquianas que enfrentam com suas famílias a dura realidade dos refugiados na Grécia. A crise dos refugiados é considerada a maior crise humanitária desde a Segunda Guerra Mundial, são infâncias interrompidas em conflitos inventados por adultos. Existem hoje cerca de 50 milhões de crianças refugiadas em todo o mundo.

The exhibition Traces of Childhood – Drawings by Refugee Children in Greece, organised by the Drawfugees project with the support of UNICEF Portugal, presents a series of drawings by child refugees from Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq who are currently living in very difficult conditions in Greece.

Às vésperas do centenário da aparição do termo “surrealismo”, empregado pela primeira vez em 1917 pelo poeta francês Guillaume Apollinaire numa referência à performance do reconhecido ballet “Parade” - a peça do escritor Jean Cocteau que estreou em maio daquele ano no Théâtre du Châtelet, em Paris, e que contava com figurinos e cenários de Pablo Picasso -, e diante de um contexto tão “surreal” quanto a própria definição do movimento artístico escrito por André Breton e personificado na figura de Salvador Dali, a Wozen subverte a realidade e recorre ao onírico, ao lisérgico e ao inconsciente para dar vida a sua nova exposição: a coletiva “UNIVERSO SURREAL, aberta ao público até 20 de Janeiro de 2017. Trata-se de uma lúdica e libertária viagem pela arte além da lógica e da razão - entre o delírio e o absurdo.

The centenary of the eve of the appearance of the term "surrealism", first used by the French poet Guillaume Apollinaire in 1917 to describe the performance of the recognized ballet "Parade" - piece of the writer Jean Cocteau which debuted in May of that year at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, had costumes and scenarios made by Pablo Picasso - and it´s in a context as "surreal" as the very definition of art movement writen by André Breton and embodied in figure of Salvador Dali, that Wozen subverts reality and resorts to dream, to the lysergic and the unconscious to give life to our new exhibition: the collective SURREAL UNIVERSE, open to the public until 20 of January of 2017. This is a fun and liberating journey through art beyond logic and reason - between delirium and absurdity. Join us!

Após a breve passagem no último ano, quando participou de coletivas no Porto e em Lisboa em sua primeira viagem internacional, o artista brasileiro Combone Wesley regressa à capital portuguesa com a proposta de dar vida a um verdadeiro carnaval no espaço sem fronteiras da Wozen. Trata-se da individual “Sob a canção Sob o amor”, na qual o artista, numa espécie de representação da aclamada festa do adeus à carne (carnis levale), faz da galeria uma passarela do samba para apresentar suas exuberantes passistas - as musas que evidenciam toda a singularidade e a delicadeza de seu trabalho. Ô abre alas...  

After his short passage last year, when he participated in collective shows in Porto and Lisbon in his first international trip, the brazilian artist Combone Wesley returns to the city with a proposal that gives life to a true carnival in the space without borders of Wozen. Entitled " a canção Sob o Amor" (Under the song Under Love), in which the artist, in a representation of the acclaimed party farewell to meat (carnis levale) makes the gallery a samba walkaway to present their exuberant dancers - the muses that show all the uniqueness and delicacy of his work. 

A partir de uma pesquisa poética ambientada entre o universo lúdico do jogo e a dramaticidade característica do movimento neo-expressionista, a artista carioca Pérola Maia Bonfanti cruza o oceano e chega a Wozen para apresentar a mais completa exposição de sua jovem carreira plástica: a individual “Se Uma Janela Dá Para o Céu e a Outra Para o Inferno, a Porta Abre Para Onde?”, aberta ao público até o dia 20 de Novembro. O cru dos recortes do tecido, o traço marcado no rústico do carvão e os desenhos que rompem as telas e ganham as paredes… A pergunta está no ar, e as portas abertas. 

From a poetic research acclimated between the playful universe of the game and drama characteristic of the neo expressionist movement, Pérola Maia Bonfanti, an artist from Rio cruzes the ocean and lands at Wozen to introduce the most complete exhibition of her young artist's career: an individual entitled “Se uma Janela Dá Para o Céu e a Outra Para o Inferno, a Porta Abre Para Onde? (If a Windows Opens to the Sky and Another to Hell, the Door Opens To Where?), opened to the public until 20th of November. The rawness in her fabric clippings, her trace marked on rustic coal and drawings that break the screens and gain the walls… The question is in the air, and the doors are open

A partir do desafio de elaborar uma exposição coletiva integrada, um exercício “junto e misturado” de work in progress capaz de romper a lógica de diversas individuais no mesmo local, os artistas cariocas Alexandre Baltazar, Marcelo Macedo, Olav Lorentzen, Peu Mello e Rafael Uzai regressam à capital portuguesa para uma nova experiência em conjunto e, desta vez, no espaço sem fronteiras da Wozen. Trata­-se da mostra “Conjunção”, a terceira edição do reconhecido projeto “DESLOCADO”, aberta ao público até o dia 9 de Outubro.

From the challenge of developing an integrated group exhibition, an exercise work in progress able to break the logic of several individual in the same place, the artists Alexandre Baltazar, Marcelo Macedo, Olav Lorentzen, Peu Mello and Rafael Uzai return to the Portuguese capital for a new experience together and, this time, in space without borders Wozen. This is the show "Conjunção” (Conjunction), the third edition of recognized project "DESLOCADO” (OFFSET). The “cariocas” together and mixed. Curated by Marcelo Duarte (Graphos:Brazil Gallery).

A narrativa regional e a riqueza de suas peculiaridades, mesmo que genuinamente assimilada à essência de seus locais de origem, mostram-se claramente envolvidas no processo de formação da chamada cultura global, na qual, dissolvida as barreiras da distância, nada mais parece imune à apropriação do modelo vigente - do canto ao conto.

The regional narrative and the richness of its peculiarities, even if genuinely assimilated to the essence of their places of origin, clearly shows the formation of the so-called global culture, in which the barriers of distance are dissolved and nothing else seems immune to the appropriation of the current model - from the chant to the tale.

Instrumento primitivo, sinal elementar e símbolo de força –> a Flecha mostra-se presente na maioria das culturas e aqui, neste caso, designa a primeira exposição realizada na Wozen. Com a missão de abrir caminho e lançar a essência do estúdio-galeria, a coletiva cruza o espaço como uma espécie de panorama artístico paralelo, no qual os trabalhos apresentados vão de encontro a uma rica diversidade de estilos e ao seu consequente diálogo. Trata-se de um traço contínuo através de distintas propostas, nacionalidades e gerações, um encontro entre diferentes artistas que, de modo geral, trazem a referência urbana como elemento em comum, seja como suporte, plataforma ou fonte de inspiração. 

Primitive instrument, elementary sign and a symbol of strength -> the Arrow is present in multiple cultures and here evoked to the debut exhibition of WOZEN, a studio-gallery dedicated to the artistic pluralism. With the intent to open paths and spread the essence, the collective show “Flecha” crosses spaces as a live artistic panorama, in which the works presented offer a diversity of styles and a respective dialogue. A continuous and unerring line between different proposals, nationalities and generations, an encounter of different artists that have their libertarian painting in common.
