ATELIER M, UMA ESCOLA PARA AS ARTES EM SÃO TOMÉ | Atelier M, a school for the arts in São Tomé

O conceituado artista plástico Kwame de Sousa criou uma escola informal de artes que é o único programa de educação artística no país.
The renowned plastic artist Kwame de Sousa created an informal arts school that is the only art education program in the country.
Kwame de Sousa fez parte da sua formação em Lisboa no Ar.Co – Centro de arte e comunicação visual e o modelo inspirou-o a criar o Atelier M. O desejo inicial foi o de criar um centro de referência como contributo para o desenvolvimento das artes.
O artista idealizou o projeto, construiu de raíz o edifício para a escola e arquitetou a componente de formação, tudo com os seus próprios recursos. “Construí este projeto com a venda dos meus trabalhos. A ideia surgiu-me quando ainda estava a viver e a trabalhar em Amesterdão, onde ficava a galeria que me representava na altura. Muitos amigos compraram os meus trabalhos para que eu tivesse mais dinheiro para fazer as obras e dar início ao projeto” refere Kwame de Sousa.
Kwame de Sousa was part of a training in Lisbon at Ar.Co – Center for art and visual communication and the model inspired him to create Atelier M. The initial desire was to create a reference center as a contribution to the development of Art.
The artist conceived the project, built the school building from scratch and designed the training component, all with his own resources. “I built this project by selling my work. The idea came to me when I was still living and working in Amsterdam, where the gallery that represented me at the time was located. Many friends bought my works so that I would have more money to do the work and start the project” says Kwame de Sousa.

“Há um programa a cumprir”
Os alunos que concorrem ao Atelier M devem ter o 9.º ano completo e continuar os seus estudos no ensino secundário. A formação artística do Atelier é de três anos, na área da pintura, escultura e desenho, (e atualmente há um aluno a seguir a área da fotografia) sendo o último ano destinado à preparação do projeto final individual de cada aluno.
Apesar de ser um projeto piloto e estar ainda numa fase inicial, o artista são-tomense exige dedicação e trabalho por parte dos alunos. “Não se trata de uma ocupação de tempos livres, há um programa a cumprir, com aulas teóricas de inglês, português e história de arte, por exemplo, além das aulas práticas. As turmas são constituídas por nove alunos por ano, separados em dois grupos nas aulas práticas. Não podemos ter mais que nove alunos porque estes cursos são muito caros. O Atelier fornece tudo, os alunos não pagam rigorosamente nada.”
Além da formação, o Atelier M recebe artistas dos EUA, Holanda, Cabo Verde e Portugal para residências artísticas em São Tomé e que apoiam a formação dos alunos, permitindo o contacto com novas realidades e expressões artísticas. “Construí ao lado do ateliê, uma zona de residências para os professores que vêm de fora. São artistas que conheço e com os quais tenho relações. Acham interessante o projeto e aceitam colaborar.”
"There is a program to follow"
Students applying to Atelier M must have completed the 9th year and continue their studies in secondary education. The Atelier's artistic training lasts for three years, in the area of painting, sculpture and drawing, (and currently there is one student in the field of photography) and the last year is dedicated to the preparation of each student's individual final project.
Despite being a pilot project and still at an early stage, the São Tomé artist requires dedication and work from the students. “This is not an occupation of free time, there is a program to follow, with theoretical classes in English, Portuguese and art history, for example, in addition to practical classes. Classes are made up of nine students per year, separated into two groups in practical classes. We cannot have more than nine students because these courses are very expensive. The Atelier provides everything, students do not pay strictly for anything.”
In addition to training, Atelier M receives artists from the USA, the Netherlands, Cape Verde and Portugal for artistic residencies in São Tomé, which support the training of students, allowing them to come into contact with new realities and artistic expressions. “I built next to the studio, a residential area for teachers who come from abroad. They are artists I know and with whom I have relationships. They find the project interesting and agree to collaborate.”

Os próximos desafios de Kwame de Sousa são a construção de um novo espaço, fora da cidade de S. Tomé, para desenvolver o seu próprio trabalho enquanto artista e para os alunos que não vivem na cidade e que têm mais dificuldades nas deslocações; este espaço poderia apoiar ainda a continuidade da formação dos alunos que estão a terminar o último ano. “Estou à procura de parcerias para que os melhores possam seguir o seu percurso artístico em Portugal. Neste campo, eu sozinho já não consigo”. A Fundação Gulbenkian apoiou já a ida de dois professores do Ar.Co para a orientação de dois cursos no Atelier M e uma mesa de serigrafia para apoiar o ensino desta técnica.
Kwame de Sousa considera que o Atelier M é já um “modelo que se sabe que funciona” e espera assim contribuir para que São Tomé e Príncipe venha a ter um conjunto de jovens artistas que possam vir a trabalhar no país.
Kwame de Sousa's next challenges are the construction of a new space, outside the city of S. Tomé, to develop his own work as an artist and for students who do not live in the city and who have more difficulties in getting around; this space could also support the continuity of training for students who are finishing their final year. “I'm looking for partnerships so that the best can follow their artistic path in Portugal. In this field, I alone can no longer do it”. The Gulbenkian Foundation has already supported the visit of two Ar.Co professors to supervise two courses at Atelier M and a screen printing table to support the teaching of this technique.
Kwame de Sousa considers that Atelier M is already a “model that is known to work” and hopes to contribute so that São Tomé and Príncipe will have a group of young artists who may come to work in the country.
