We’ve long been enamored by the tattoo artistry of Jade Tomlinson and Kev James of Expanded Eye who examine a collision of human conciousness, geometry and the natural world in their refreshingly original artworks. The duo has also begun producing three dimensional pieces in the form of sculptures and painted assemblages built from repurposed wood. The cut fragments serve as a canvas or become fully articulated parts of faces or limbs adorned with pieces of windows, doors and books, all found on the street.

As with their tattoo work, Jade and Kev work side by side to develop new concepts in a process that begins with sketching and gradually moves into 3D. “The aesthetic however is an exciting process of unconscious evolution, as the pieces grow and take shape by immersing ourselves in our studio full of reclaimed wood and found objects,” they share with Colossal. “Using [the] same visual language and symbols to depict stories and concepts but with skin comes limitations, as opposed to working with wood and large scale, you have boundless artistic freedom. Different mediums allow for different explorations.”

Expanded Eye just premiered several new sculptures and a print at Vertical Gallery in Chicago as part of their three year anniversary show with Jana & JS, and STATIC on view through the end of April. They also built several large-scale installations for the adhocPAD project space in Vienna. You can follow more of their work on Instagram and Facebook.

Rito de Passagem Exhibition | Change is the only constant

Eritage Exhibition | Rito de Passagem | 10.10.2020 - 31.01.2021

EXPOSIÇÃO COLECTIVA: Kwame Sousa (ST) | Francisco Vidal (ANG / PT) | JAS (PT) | Expanded Eye (ENG) | Manuela Pimentel (PT)

A mudança é a única constante.

Change is the only constant. Year by year, month by month, day by day, moment by moment, everything is changing. Nothing lasts forever, and this truth is both wonderful and terrible.

The selected artists present recent and new works that point in the direction of a rite of passage, an observance of change, a shifting identity, a call to action.

Change is the only constant. Year by year, month by month, day by day, moment by moment, everything is changing. Nothing lasts forever, and this truth is both wonderful and terrible.

A rite of passage is our way to stop together, and pay attention to change. in rites of passage we honor the past and chart a course into the future, becoming conscious about what we have learned and use this knowledge in a meaningful way.

ERITAGE uses this pause to come to attention. Let us mark the end of social and economic ideologies that are not aligned with collective well-being, rise to the recognition of ourselves as small parts of a great whole.

Rites of Passage help us sail through the multiple versions of our personality, the phases of life, the sets of expectations and responsibilities. This opening launches, perchance, the beginning of a new community where more of us can thrive both as collaborators and as companions: a community built on the foundations of our interdependence.

Expanded Eye (previously) is an arts collective formed by London-based artists Jade Tomlinson and Kevin James that utilizes a wide range of media to explore human consciousness and connectivity. The pair use salvaged wood to create colorful assemblages, sculptures, and public murals each designed in their unmistakable geometric style. Natural elements such as plants and birds are common motifs in their three-dimensional works. These images also cross over into their long-running tattoo practice which combines illustrated doodles, architecture-inspired renderings, and triangular patterns.

The duo is currently in Lisbon for a three month residency at WOZEN, which wraps up next month. During their stay they have been exploring the socio-economic and environmental pressures of the community, and creating work that seeks to address local issues of over-consumption, waste, and gentrification in Portugal’s capital. A cumulative exhibition titled No Future Without Memory will open at the space on November 9, and include the many large-scale three-dimensional works the pair have made during their time at the studio. You can follow more of their work on Instagram and Facebook.
