WHEREVER YOU GO, THERE YOU ARE

Javiera Gart

Chile, b. 1995, Santiago

Javiera Gart is a Latin American painter who has spent thirteen years living across six countries in search of herself. Born in Santiago, she spent formative years in Buenos Aires — where she began painting as a self-taught practitioner — before moving through Mexico, Australia, Europe, North America, and Asia, collecting colours, gestures, and cultural layers that feed directly into her work. Her life and her practice have been one continuous movement: not in search of novelty but in search of healing and self-discovery. As she herself reflects: “Wherever you go, there you are. We always carry our history, our past, our experience — everything.” The exhibition’s title is not a concept for Gart. It is a lived truth.

At the centre of her painting is the female figure — and specifically, the Latin American woman in all her complexity. She is not simply a subject but a transmission: a body that carries the knowledge, the silence, the strength, and the resilience of the women who came before, opening toward those who will come after. Gart’s practice is deeply rooted in Latin American feminine ancestry — in the particular way that women in this tradition have always known how to hold the world together while remaining largely invisible within it.

Playfulness is, for Gart, not a stylistic choice but a philosophy. “The most important thing for me in my creative process is playfulness,” she says. “Sometimes we don’t want to do things because we don’t want to make mistakes. But for me, it’s right there — inside those mistakes — where I find beauty.” Her canvases carry a tender nostalgia, honouring the simple rhythms of daily life and eternising the ordinary moments that most of us let pass unnoticed.

Wherever You Go, There You Are is her first exhibition in Europe.
