The Expanded Eye project, formed by the London couple Jade Tomlinson and Kevin James after a transformative journey through Asia in 2009, has gained rapid renown in the international contemporary art world for the naturality with which its unmistakable language is able to travel through numerous different media, such as painting, illustration, sculpture, ceramics, installation and tattooing, to form a cohesive and surpringly eclectic artistic unity.
O projeto Expanded Eye, formado pelo casal londrino Jade Tomlinson e Kevin James após uma transformadora viagem pela Ásia em 2009, ganhou rápido prestígio no meio artístico contemporâneo internacional pela naturalidade com que sua inconfundível linguagem é capaz de transitar por inúmeras mídias diferentes, como pintura, ilustração, escultura, cerâmica, instalação e tatuagem, para formar uma unidade artística coesa e surpreendentemente eclética.
Their deep sensitivity and genuine concern with every detail of the narrative presented translates into atmospheric works, capable of transporting the observer to a world of visual poetry, carefully imagined and materialized to convey an enthusiasm that precedes any word. The mastery of various techniques and the skillful manipulation and juxtaposition of materials allow Expanded Eye to produce intricate compositions of interconnected pieces at various scales, as parts of a puzzle that gives new meanings to items once regarded as ordinary.
Sua profunda sensibilidade e genuína preocupação com cada detalhe da narrativa apresentada se traduzem em obras atmosféricas, capazes de transportar o observador a um mundo de poesia visual, cuidadosamente imaginado e materializado para transmitir um entusiasmo que precede qualquer palavra. O domínio de variadas técnicas e a hábil manipulação e justaposição de materiais permitem que o Expanded Eye produza intrincadas composições de peças interconectadas, nas mais variadas escalas, como partes de um quebra-cabeças que confere novos significados a itens outrora tidos como banais.
For the three-month residency at Wozen, Kevin and Jade continue their investigation into the memory and identity of a given society at a given time, applying their efforts to the study of Lisbon and the growing socio-economic, environmental and technological pressures that distort the sense of private identity and gradually stifle the collective memory of a community.
Para a residência de três meses na Wozen, Kevin e Jade continuam sua investigação pela memória e identidade de uma determinada sociedade em uma determinada época, aplicando seus esforços ao estudo de Lisboa e das crescentes pressões socioeconômicas, ambientais e tecnológicas que distorcem o senso de identidade particular e gradualmente sufocam a memória coletiva de uma comunidade.
Impressed by the number of old artifacts discarded in the numerous renovations taking place in the city, the duo quickly found a relevant starting point for their research on the accelerated growth process of an urban ecosystem. Jade and Kevin embark on the challenge of simultaneously preserving these physical fragments of memory, as they seek to spark a deeper discussion about sustainability, waste, over-consumption, gentrification, standardization, and the loss of cultural identity.
Impressionados pela quantidade de artefactos antigos descartados nas inúmeras renovações que ocorrem pela cidade, o duo rapidamente encontrou um ponto de partida relevante para suas pesquisas sobre os o processo de crescimento acelerado de um ecossistema urbano. Ao decidirem utilizar apenas materiais abandonados pelos lixos e obras da cidade, Jade e Kevin se lançam ao desafio simultâneo de preservar estes fragmentos físicas de memória, enquanto procuram iniciar uma discussão mais profunda sobre sustentabilidade, desperdício, consumo exagerado, gentrificação, uniformização e perda de identidade cultural.
Their art can evoke a sense of nostalgia even in younger audiences, who recognize, albeit subconsciously, the subtle message for a return to the roots, appreciation for the simpler and more profound and direct connections between individuals amongst themselves and with nature, for the development of a healthy and responsible society.
Sua arte consegue evocar um sentimento de nostalgia até em audiências mais jovens, que reconhecem, ainda que inconscientemente, a sutil mensagem de retorno às raízes, apreço pela simplicidade e conexão mais profunda e direta entre indivíduos e destes com a natureza, para o desenvolvimento de uma sociedade saudável e responsável.
After the first couple of weeks of working daily with the couple, one can easily observe that ideas are as beautiful in their heads as they become in reality. Disciplined, discreet and always conscious to the effect of their work in the environment in which it is inserted, Kevin and Jade are the art they produce: an Impressive creative talent at the service of a beautiful and enlightening message.
Após as primeiras semanas de convívio com o casal, torna-se claro que as ideias são tão belas em suas cabeças quanto se tornam na realidade. Disciplinados, discretos e sempre atentos ao efeito de seu trabalho no ambiente em que se insere, Kevin e Jade são a arte que produzem: um Impressionante talento criativo a serviço de uma linda e esclarecedora mensagem.
Until November, this residence will stage several activities and will become an exhibition display, which will continue through the winter. The collection of abandoned materials will be constant until the end of the residence, so we accept donations of old items (books, furniture, doors, windows, etc) that would be discarded and can be recycled by artists.
Até Novembro, esta residência será palco de diversas atividades e se transformará em uma exibição, que se prolongará pelo inverno. A coleta de materiais abandonados será constante até o final da residência, portanto aceitamos doações de itens (livros, móveis, portas, janelas, etc) antigos que seriam descartados e podem vir a ser reciclados pelos artistas.
