The Angolan Artist Cristiano Mangovo and the Challenge Of Investigating One Of The Biggest Contemporary Paradigms

For this Spring Residence, Wozen launches itself to the challenge of investigating one of the biggest contemporary paradigms, human mobility and international migration, facing a world in constant movement. Including, the approximation of borders due to the development of technology in contrast to exponential growth of the number of refugees and acts of extremism.

Para esta Residência de Primavera, a Wozen lança-se ao desafio de investigar um dos maiores paradigmas contemporâneos, a mobilidade humana, a migração internacional diante de um mundo em constante movimento, a aproximação das fronteiras devido ao avanço da tecnologia em contraste ao crescimento exponencial do número de refugiados e actos de extremismo.  

During the period of three months, the Angolan artist Cristiano Mangovo will take over our multidisciplinary territory with the responsibility of sharing a sensitive look in order to present an overarching view of current migration dynamics and will analyze the complex and emerging issues that have been shaping and challenging the concept of human mobility and democracy. The central aim is to bring issues such as transnational connectivity, international displacement, labour migration and remittances, migrant smuggling and human trafficking, xenophobia and social integration to the surface and to perform an active form of critic.

Durante o período de três meses, o artista angolano Cristiano Mangovo assume este território multidisciplinar com a responsabilidade de partilhar uma visão abrangente da atual dinâmica de migração, analisando questões complexas e emergentes que vêm moldando e colocando desafios à mobilidade humana e à democracia. O objetivo é trazer para superfície temas como conectividade transnacional, remessa de mão-de-obra, tráfico de pessoas, migração irregular, xenofobia e integração social.

Mangovo was born in 1982 in Cabinda - Angola. Due to the civil war that had been ongoing in his country after the independence from the Portuguese authorities, Cristiano and his family migrated as a minor refugee to the Democratic Republic of Congo, where he lived until he was of age and trained in plastic arts, especially in painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Kinshasa. He returned to his birth country in 2009 after the official signing of the peace agreement in Angola.

Mangovo nasceu em 1982 em Cabinda - Angola. Devido a guerra civil que tomara conta de seu País após independência do domínio português, junto da sua família, Cristiano migrou como menor de idade refugiado para República Democrática do Congo, onde viveu até maior de idade e fez formação de Artes plásticas, especialmente em pintura na Faculdade de Belas Artes de Kinshasa. Regressa em 2009 após a assinatura de acordo da paz em Angola.

His work is multifaceted, ranging from portraiture to impressionism and surrealism, through the installation, in which he developed new techniques and discovered different materials. In any of his currents or trends, he already developed a distinctive feature that distinguishes his significant style in the context of contemporary Angolan painting. The artist of WOZEN spring residence was selected not only by his artistic practice, but also for his extraordinary trajectory and for the reflection of his non-traditional life choices on the artwork he produces, facing an oppressive system. He is a survivor who represents the voice of millions wich struggle exclusively by its own existence.

Sua obra é multifacetada, variando de retrato a impressionismo e surrealismo, através da instalação, na qual ele experimenta novas técnicas e diferentes materiais. Em qualquer destas correntes ou tendências, já possui um traço distintivo que distingue o seu estilo no contexto da pintura contemporânea angolana. O artista desta residência de primavera fora selecionado não apenas pela sua prática artística, mas por sua trajetória de vida e os reflexos de suas escolhas não tradicionais na arte que produz, diante um sistema opressor, é um sobrevivente que representa a voz de milhões que batalham exclusivamente por sua existência.

International migration is a complex phenomenon that touches on a multiplicity of economic, social and security elements affecting our daily lives in an increasingly interconnected world. In recent years, we have also seen a significant boost in displacement of populations, both internal and across borders, which has largely stemmed from civil and transnational conflict, including acts of violent extremism outside actual war zones.

A migração internacional é um fenômeno complexo que abrange uma multiplicidade de elementos econômicos, sociais e de segurança que afetam o cotidiano de um mundo cada vez mais interconectado. Nos últimos anos, assistimos a um aumento significativo do deslocamento de populações, tanto internas como transfronteiriças, em grande parte devido a conflitos civis e transnacionais, incluindo actos de extremismos fora das zonas de guerra.

Its role is to bring an anthropologically reflexive look, an analysis considering the demographic, geographic and geopolitical variations that shape the realities of migration around the world. The exercise of portraying, with no make-up, the particular universe of these real characters, is an attempt to address deeper issues that still remain silent within the social discourse.

Seu papel é trazer um olhar reflexivo, do ponto de vista antropológico, uma análise considerando as variações demográficas, geográficas e geopolíticas que moldam as realidades da migração em todo mundo.  O exercício de traçar um retrato sem maquilhagens do universo particular destes personagens reais como uma tentativa de abordar mais profundamente um tema ainda silencioso na trama social.

During the months of residence, Wozen's borderless territory will become a studio, a gallery, a stage for artistic exchange, for classes, activities, debates, performances and artistic and social experiments. We reinforce our commitment to the principle of art-consciousness and it is part of our constant search for viable and sustainable model of development, production and artistic education, that seeks to benefit not only artists, but the community from which they came.

Durante os meses de residência, o território sem fronteiras da Wozen se tornará ao mesmo tempo estúdio, galeria, palco de intercambio artístico, para aulas, atividades, debates, performances e experimentos artísticos e sociais. Reforçamos nosso compromisso com o princípio da arte-consciência e uma continuação da constante busca por um modelo viável e sustentável de desenvolvimento, produção e educação artística que beneficie não apenas os artistas como a comunidade de onde vieram. 

A spring with the purpose of flourish the inner divinity of the individual, exercising sensitivity through simple feelings of inspiration in order to seek a more empathic and creative society.

Uma primavera com o propósito de fazer florescer a divindade interior do indivíduo, exercitando a sensibilidade através de sentimentos singelos de inspiração para assim buscarmos uma sociedade mais empática e criativa.
