Nascido em 1982, David Shillinglaw cresceu em Londres e se formou na Central Saint Martin em 2002. Atualmente vive e trabalha em Margate, Reino Unido. O artista britânico é conhecido por explorar temas em torno da “condição da mente humana” – David atua neste espaço conflituoso e confuso, que em última análise se relaciona com a condição humana: uma necessidade implacável de controle dentro de um mundo desordenado. Suas pinturas vibrantes e vitais apresentam um sistema caótico, no qual formas naturais, palavras livremente conectadas e traços humanos irrompem e estão contidos em grades, caixas e linhas organizadas. Sentimentos contraditórios de liberdade e confinamento, segurança e claustrofobia convivem em suas obras.

Como artista, David luta com esse equilíbrio de ordem e desordem. Ele voltou várias vezes à citação de Carl Jung: “Em todo caos há um cosmos, em toda desordem uma ordem secreta”. Suas obras falam de nossa jornada exaustiva para descobrir alguma forma de estrutura organizada. Mas eles também sugerem que nunca entenderemos completamente o mundo ao nosso redor, e é aí que reside o verdadeiro significado.

As obras emaranhadas e alegres de David sugerem que é impossível entender completamente ou reivindicar propriedade sobre qualquer coisa nesta vida. Quando procuramos a versão cognoscível, complacente e essencialmente “segura” de nós mesmos, dos outros e do mundo ao nosso redor, nos vemos cegos. A beleza está em nos entregarmos ao caos cósmico que nos cerca e confiar que, mesmo que não possamos vê-lo, há uma ordem primorosa por trás disso. Talvez seja apenas nos entregando totalmente ao mundo, aceitando nosso papel como uma parte precária e não o autor dele, que podemos realmente começar a respeitá-lo, cuidá-lo e – como David faz com total espontaneidade – deleitar-nos com suas muitas maravilhas sublimes.

“The british artist is renowned for exploring themes around the "mind human condition" – David works in this conflicted and messy space, which ultimately relates to the human condition: a relentless need for control within a disordered world. His vibrant, vital paintings present a chaotic system, in which natural forms, freely connected words and human features both burst from and are contained within grids, boxes and organised lines. Contradictory feelings of freedom and confinement, safety and claustrophobia, coexist within his works. 

As an artist, David wrestles with this equilibrium of order and disorder. He has returned numerous times to the Carl Jung quote: “In all chaos there is a cosmos, in all disorder a secret order.” His works speak of our all-consuming journey to figure out some form of neat structure. But they also suggest that we will never fully understand the world around us, and that is where the real meaning lies. 

David’s tangled, joyful works suggest that it is impossible to fully understand or claim ownership over anything in this life. When we hunt for the knowable, compliant, in essence ‘safe’ version of ourselves, others, and the world around us, we find ourselves blinkered. The beauty lies in giving ourselves to the cosmic chaos that surrounds us, and trusting that even if we cannot see it, there is an exquisite order behind it. It is perhaps only in fully giving ourselves up to the world, in accepting our role as one precarious part and not the author of it, that we can really begin to respect it, care for it, and—as David does with wild abandon—revel in its many sublime wonders.
